I replace my HP laptop recently with a Dell Inspiron 15 5000. While it’s a great developer machine, I have no use for the touchscreen. It is annoying when I touch the screen trying to explain something to someone, and the virtual keyboard pops up.
Checking the device
To be able to change the configuration for an input device, I have an idea that there must be some input configuration file for X11 under /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/.
I opened the file: 40-libinput.conf with the following command:
sudo nano /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/40-libinput.conf
I edited the section that matches the touchscreen:
Identifier "libinput touchscreen catchall"
I changed the MatchIsTouchscreen property to “off”, saved and closed the file. I then restarted the computer. Simple as that, the touchscreen was switched off permanently, until I change that property back to “on”, save the file and reboot.
