Eeschema is a schematic capture software distributed as part of KiCad used for the design of schematics. It contains all drawing, control, layout, library management and access to the PCB design software functions. It can also generate and export netlist files. It includes:
- A component symbol editor which creates and edits components and manages libraries
- Design rules check (DRC) for the automatic control of incorrect and missing connections
- Export of plot files in many formats like PDF, Postscript etc
- Bill of materials generation
Designing the schematic
We will design a simple circuit consisting of 1 100Ohm resistor, 1 diode, a 2-pin connector, a 3.3V power source and a ground pin.

Hotkeys in Eeschema are very important and make work easier and faster. For instance: Press “A/a” to add a component, “R/r” to rotate the component, “M/m” to move the component etc. They are located under Preferences. They can also be redefined by the user. Finally, don’t forget to keep saving your work. You can then go on and associate components with their footprints. If it’s your first circuit, you may want to Create an offline KiCad library repository for PCB footprints before associating your components with their footprints.
